About Richard Liu Qiangdong Entrepreneurial Career

 

After graduating from Renmin University with a degree in Sociology in 1996, Richard Liu Qiangdong ventured into different businesses before founding JD.com, a giant online retail store in China. During his early life, Richard Liu grew with an interest of joining politics, but with their humble background, he opted to be an entrepreneur.

Career History

Before completing his university studies, Richard Liu had begun involving in businesses as a way of sustaining his studies and supporting the family. He started by helping in his family trade business before establishing his career in a small restaurant which failed similarly to the trading of health products. After both businesses failed, he began selling computer accessories in 1998 which picked up well expanding to twelve stores across China.

In 2003, the business again crumbled due to the rise of an epidemic which hit China hindering his clients from accessing the stores. Richard Liu Qiangdong closed down the stores, held a meeting with his managers which gave rise to the establishment of an online retail platform. In 2004 is the year JD.com come to existence.

According to Richard Liu, JD.com has over one billion distinct products ranging from health, foods, clothing, cosmetics, electronics, and furniture. The company remains considered the greatest in China, and it’s expected to expand its branches to Europe, the United States, and the Middle East.

Family and Other Ventures

Richard Liu was born in China and is married with two children and has two sisters; one a teacher and another studying outside China. During his free time, Richard Liu Qiangdong likes touring desert areas and has traveled all the deserts in China, swimming and walking fast. Liu is also involved in charitable organizations and making donations to various institutions. Richard Liu established a children’s and environmental conservation foundations to promote environmental protection and management and supporting the unfortunate children in the community.
