OSI Industries has approximately 20,000 employees, making OSI one of the largest food providers in the world. With a presence in 17 countries the food provider has 65 facilities worldwide. The food supplier has its roots at the beginning of the 20th century with a German immigrant in Chicago named Otto Kolschowsky. Kolschowsky opened a small meat market that served as a retail provider and butcher shop in Chicago, Illinois in 1909. Within 10 years the entrepreneur moved into the wholesale meat market and moved his business to Maywood, a Chicago suburb.
In 1928 Otto the business was renamed “Otto and Sons” and continued to be a stable business for decades after the end of the Second World War. In Des Plaines, Illinois in 1955 Ray Kroc opened the first McDonald’s while he was working as a franchise agent for Richard and Maurice McDonald from San Bernardino, California. Otto Kolschowsky’s sons, Harry and Arthur, made an agreement with Mr. Kilschowsky to supply the newly reorganized family business that later become one of the most successful franchises based in the United States. As McDonald’s shaped the framework of the modern franchise structure during it’s growth the company now known as OSI Industries continued to partner with Kroc, who eventually bought McDonald’s and became the first chief executive officer of the McDonald corporation.
In the 20 years following the partnership between Kroc and the Kolchowsky family the food supplier began to expand internationally. Their partnerships in Asia began with a company in Taiwan named K & K Foods, a partnership that began in 1987. in 1990 a joint venture named GenOSI was started in the Philippines and in 1992 OSI Industries made their first investment in China with a Beijing based Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise. In the 15 years following the creating of a Beijing presence OSI Industries expanded into Australia and India while the company expanded into acquisitions of fresh produce suppliers.
With more than a century of successful business operations OSI Industries has excelled in client relations as well as technological innovation and recognition of growth opportunities. Today the small family owned business that began in Chicago is one of the world’s largest food providers.
